Healthy Kai workshop to celebrate Matariki

We held our first Matariki hui on Saturday 10 June, focused on healthy kai. We had over 30 whānau attend, who experienced some familiar and unfamiliar Māori-Mediterranean fusion kai and rongoa like kawakawa, beautiful raw fish and karengo.

Whānau created this kai together, with the help of facilitators Cathy and Haimona. We all learned about how kai, relaxation and breathing affect our tinana. It was also a great opportunity for our young people to take charge of the cooking, while parents and caregivers sat back and enjoyed a bit of pampering. Claire from Mobile Massage Corporate Company gave neck and shoulder massages to some lucky whānau, who we hope are now feeling relaxed and ready for the Māori new year.

You can download some of the yummy recipes here.

Pēpēhā workshop

Our whānau have great ideas for what they'd like to do with Hei Whakapiki Mauri this year. The first of these was to run a pēpēhā workshop on May 2.

It was great to see lots of new whānau at this hui, which was an excellent chance to learn together in an informal setting. We also shared some delicious kai - as usual.

The mihimihi-pēpēhā resource from this workshop can be downloaded here.

Our next whānau hui will be in June to celebrate Matariki and make healthy kai.

Whānau enjoy meeting new Navigator Waikura

Our new Navigator Waikura is off to a great start. We introduced her to whānau for the first time at our April 8 hui.

Whānau at 8 April hui

It was an awesome hui with great waiata, music from Mr. H and some excellent fried bread. Elizabeth also kindly read some of her poetry - fantastic!

Since this hui, Waikura has been busy supporting whānau in a variety of practical ways and has also started working with some whānau on planning pathways to their dreams and aspirations for the future.

Introducing our new Whānau Ora Navigator

We're excited to welcome our new Navigator Waikura McGregor. Waikura comes to us from the education sector and has a long history of working within her community and marae to create change.

Waikura's role is to work with disabled Māori and whānau to help them find pathways to achieve their goals and aspirations. She will also support individuals and whānau to find their voice and advocate for themselves. Waikura is ready to start working with whānau now, so please get in touch if you are interested, or know someone who might benefit from working with a Navigator.

Kia ora whānau. I’m very excited to be starting my new role as Whānau Ora Navigator with Hei Whakapiki Mauri.

My background is in teaching and I am looking forward to sharing knowledge about te reo and Te Ao Māori with whānau.

I have a passion for whānau ora and a strong community focus. Disability has always been part of my life and I have supported my whānau and marae as a caregiver and advocate for many years.

I believe that whakawhanaungatanga gives whānau the power to lift one another up.

I am a very a proud Mum and enjoy contributing to my marae, weaving, waka ama, fitness and gardening.
